Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of the Adult (LADA)

Web Resource Last Updated: 31-05-2023

LADA is similar to type 1 diabetes in that your body’s immune system attacks the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin, but it develops more gradually and at a later age, in a similar way to type 2 diabetes.

If you have LADA you will not usually require insulin for the first three to six months following your diagnosis. However, as many as four out of five people will require insulin within five years. Your doctor may advise you to start taking insulin sooner rather than later, before your blood glucose levels get out of control, but many patients are treated as though they have type 2 diabetes, at least to begin with.
