Slimming World is the UK’s favourite weight-loss organisation* with around 20,000 groups across the UK and Ireland that offer weekly group support to help people make gradual changes towards a healthy lifestyle. 

Group members have free access to online support including recipes and motivational features and success stories. For members who can’t attend a regular weekly group there is also an online option.

What to expect

At their local Slimming World group, members learn about making changes to their eating habits and building activity into their routine.

By being part of a supportive group either in their community or online, they start to identify the triggers that take them off track and develop strategies to help them stick to making healthier choices.

They celebrate success, share experiences, ideas and solutions to common challenges that could hold their weight loss back, and swap practical advice such as recipes and motivate each other to become more active.

Who runs the group

Groups are all run by a trained Consultant, who themselves have lost weight at Slimming World. Consultants receive ongoing training to support members to make practical changes as well as identify the psychological and emotional triggers that prevent long term success and lifestyle change.

What sort of programme is it?

Members follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based around satisfying your appetite by enjoying healthy, everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, potatoes, eggs, pulses, fish, lean meat and chicken, so that there’s no need to ever go hungry.

The plan is extremely flexible and offers a great amount of choice, putting members in control of the foods they eat and when they eat them, which makes it easy to fit in any personal advice they may have been given by their diabetes care team and makes it suitable for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
